An Electric Volkswagen Car Takes On Pikes Peak

When you visit Executive Volkswagen of North Haven, you won’t just find vehicles that are reliable. The cars on our lot are also pretty capable. A model like the 2018 Volkswagen Jetta will offer a great driving experience for years to come, and you’ll be surprised at just how far you can push our vehicles. That’s why we’re sure that even an all-electric Volkswagen I.D. vehicle can tackle the legendary Pikes Peak.

Romain Dumas recently got the chance to drive the Volkswagen I.D. R Pikes Peak prototype. This all-wheel drive racecar weighs less than 2,500 pounds and has been designed with aerodynamic performance in mind. Two electric motors power this unique vehicle, giving it a total output of 680 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. That means that this vehicle can go from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in just over two seconds. Not bad for a green car.

This model is meant to set a brand new record for electric vehicles on the Pikes Peak course. The previous record for this 12.42 mile, 156-turn course was around eight minutes and fifty-seven seconds. The car that set that record back in 2016 produced nearly 1,600 horsepower, but Volkswagen engineers are going a different route. Instead of raw power, they are focusing on weight savings and aerodynamics. We’ll get to see if the I.D. R Pikes Peak racecar can set a new record for green vehicles later this month.

If you’re looking for a new Volkswagen vehicle that offers the kind of performance you can depend on, visit our Volkswagen dealership near New Haven, CT.
